I am a member of APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and a member of AABP (Association of Animal Behaviour Professionals).  I am very proactive about keeping up-to-date with the latest research relating to dog training and behaviour, and with care and welfare issues.  I have the following qualifications:

  • Principles of Canine Behaviour, Massey University ;
  • National Certificate: Compliance and Regulatory Control (Animal Welfare);
  • Certificate: Animal Welfare Investigations.
  • I have attended a variety of seminars related to dog training, behaviour and care including many presented by overseas experts such as Suzanne Clothier, Kay Laurence, Turid Rugaas, Susan Garrett, Sheila Harper, Anne Lill Kvam, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Susan Freidman and Mary Ray.

    I possess an extensive (and ever-expanding) library of books, videos, DVDs and magazines relating to dog training, behaviour and care.

    12. What experiences do you have with dogs? (ie. obedience, agility, work at SPCA etc) I instructed at the local obedience club for several years and also competed in obedience for a while.  I worked full-time for 2 years at the local SPCA primarily as Dog Compound Manager and as a certified Animal Welfare Inspector. I visit a local school each term with one of my dogs to show school children the results that can be achieved with positive reinforcement training.  I am interested in clicker training, trick training, freestyle dancing with dogs, and Rally Obedience.  I run private and group training classes for pet dogs and give private instruction for competition obedience.
    13. What are your favourite dog books?

    Patricia McConnell: The Other End of the Leash

    Jean Donaldson: The Culture Clash

    Karen Pryor: Don't Shoot the Dog!: The New Art of Teaching and Training

    R & L Coppinger: Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution

    Pat Miller: Positive Perspectives: Love Your Dog, Train Your Dog

    Suzanne Hetts: Pet Behavior Protocols: What to Say, What to Do, When to Refer

    Karen Overall: Clinical Behavioral Medicine For Small Animals

    Leslie McDevitt Control Unleashed - Creating a Focused and Confident Dog

    Kay Laurence Clicker Dances with Dogs, Clicker Foundation Training: Level 1

    14. Is there anything else we should know about you and your dog training business?

    My passion is teaching pet dog training using gentle, motivational methods.  My group classes are held in an all-weather venue but I also do private in-home training for those who prefer individual instruction.  I also do behaviour consultations for a comprehensive range of behaviour problems.  Dog walking and pet minding are part of the services offered.

    I happily donate one afternoon of my time every week to the local SPCA in order to give the dogs and puppies looking for new homes some obedience and manners training to help them become more adoptable.
