Last Newsletter Quiz's: Ivan Pavlov was a pioneer in using dogs for experiments. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1904 for what work?

Digestive secretions (Which proves: Sometimes the importance of a person's work gets mislabeled. He actually pioneered classical conditioning experiments!)

Queen Victoria's Border Collies

Cold Water Tail "Cold water tail," "limber tail syndrome," "broken tail," "dead tail," "broken wag" are all euphemisms for a relatively common occurrence in sporting dogs. This episode appears to be a painful, but relatively benign affliction that can occur after swimming, after a heavy hunting day or after a bath with cold water or water that is too warm.

Chow Yun-fat -- his character is named "Tequila" -- uses a pair of Chinese pistols, copies of the Russian Tokarev, which seem to have infinite magazine capacity -- in reality, 8. But it's still a great scene, gory but beautifully choreographed. In Asia, Chow is a combination of Steve McQueen and Cary Grant

Had to get Jean Donaldson's new book -- and DVD -- Train Your Dog Like a Pro. Really, I'm not a pure positive trainer. I use force corrections for safety violations, for teaching what *not* to do, esp. what *never* to do, and I don't grow faint when someone mentions e-collars. There are things I compel my dogs to do, such as a down-stay while I have dinner, and things I punish, such as canines' canines in contact with my flesh. (Excepting when Riv and I are rough housing, he gently takes dental hold of my cheek or nose. Quite playful, sort of tickles. He has the best bite discipline of any dog I've had.) Nevertheless, I can't resist Donaldson. I disagree with her at times, but she writes with such wit, I just enjoy the hell out of her books. (And, yeah, and I've had the hots for her for 12 yrs or more, and that impedes my judgment, I admit it.) After all, I'm an unremitting atheist, but I read Merton and Chesterton.

Donaldson gives some nicely organized recipes for shaping this or that behavior. That's one of her strengths, one of the strengths of her method. She's less convincing or helpful in dealing with behaviors that aren't reducible for discrete shaping. She makes  very good teaching point in emphasizing 5 tries to determine when to push, stick, or drop:

5 successes = push to the next level or degree of difficulty
3 or 4 successes = stick with what you're working on (because you may be close to a break-through)
1 or 2 successes = drop back to a lower level or easier criterion

Five is an easy number for people to keep track of. (Really, most pet trng students aren't going to do the kind of careful bookkeeping Donaldson's recipes would demand.) Her approach makes shaping by +R/-P manageable for pet trainers.
